This spot for Kellogg's was pretty cool since we got the chance to model and animate Mr. Miniwheat in 3D. He was to be integrated with live action, so the shooting had to be done before the animation process began. Although the commercial was in French and required a substantial amount of lip-synching, the language barrier did not present any significant problems for animating.
The spot was modeled and animated with Softimage, rendered with Mental Ray, and composited with Discreet's Flame.

"Murphy The Rat" was a pitch for a television series pilot that was in production several years ago. It involved modeling, posing and animating several characters, some of which are shown below.
In particular, it's interesting to note Mental Ray's stunning toon-tracing technology here going all the way back to 1998. Not only is the anti-aliasing extremely high in quality, but the option to select and vary line thickness across the subject adds a whole new level of customization for the 3D artist.

After the plates were shot, it was realized that the train needed to have dust on it, in order to suggest inactivity. Because the original footage was shot clean, the only way to achieve this was to add the dust digitally. Here are two examples of this in which each of the frames show the clean, original plate followed by the digitally altered one.

Dome lighting is actually a rather old rendering technique which was used several years ago for simulating global illumination before consumer-based global illumination renderers were widely available. The advantages are primarily speed, but at the sacrifice of (substantial) quality. In contrast, however, flickering in animation due to global illumination sample artifacting is eliminated because the shadows maps remain consistent throughout animation.
The concept of dome lighting is rather simple. Because global illumination rendering projects light samples from a hemispheric location surro... |

Global Illumination radiance works through the transmission of light bouncing off various objects and taking a predetermined amount of that object's diffuse color with it, in order to combine it with the next object it encounters. By setting a secondary bounce limit, you can increase or decrease rendertimes significantly and control the amount of environmental light distribution throughout your scene.
This simple experiment was produced in order to test the relationship between light bounces and rendertimes, as well as study the resulting effects of adjusting these variables. In theory, the... |

This was a test produced in order to achieve a similar effect to a "Pin Art" toy which creates images by extending an array of pins.
This effect is quite simple actually, and the basic concept is to read an image, look at the luminance values of the pixels, and displace geometry accordingly. The brighter the pixel, the greater the displacement and effectively, the higher the pin elevates. The main problem in achieving this is that building any type of geometry and displacing it with the pixel values will distort the mesh. This is because the left vertices of a mesh may be displaced 10% whil... |
